Sick of “natural flavors” in your seasoning mixes? Try my Italian blend and never go back to mystery ingredients!
OK, it’s a small thing, or maybe it’s a big thing, but one of the things that drives me nuts about shopping and trying to eat real foods is seasoning mixes. “Seasoned salt,” “cajun seasoning” and “chili powder” are just a few that I’ve yet to find substitutes that don’t contain either MSG or its code word “natural flavors.” We don’t eat added MSG here, and I prefer organic when possible.
So, I’ve set out to find recipes for these blends, and today I’m sharing a real winner: Italian Seasoning Blend! (With no crap!) This stuff is awesome in salad dressings, in sauces, in breading, soups… so far everything I have put it on has been tasty. Here’s how you do it.
In a coffee or herb grinder add:
3T dried basil
3T dried Oregano
3T dried parsley
1T garlic powder
1t onion powder
1t dried thyme
1t dried rosemary
1/4 t black pepper
1/4 t red pepper flakes
Wiz this up until it’s all blended and finely ground. If you live in a humid climate or are worried about caking, add a couple grains of rice and wiz that up with the mixture. Viola! Italian seasoning blend with no question marks. I store mine in a small jar and use it in almost everything.
