I don’t know what it is about this time of year, but a giant bowl of clam chowder is just the ticket for me on a cold day.  Especially now that I have experienced the miracle that is Mimicreme…the faux heavy cream that is made from nuts and gives many of my dishes today a milky feel to them without the downside of regular milk (won’t get into all the details here, but I avoid it because milk makes me congested and I HATE that!).  It makes a really passable chowder, and with wild clams I thought I was in good shape from a seafood-toxicity perspective.

It’s well documented that large fish and farmed fish have a liability problem when it comes to pcbs and other environmental toxins, but it turns out MOST fish have some risk.  If you’re curious, you can find out more at http://www.ewg.org/.  That’s the environmental working group’s site, and they have great info on fish, shellfish and even a guide to sushi for those of us who dare to go raw.
